MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - The snowmen in the neighborhood of a Mason City church are decked out in colorful scarves, a project that brightens the otherwise monochrome landscape but has a deeper purpose.
Eight members of Trinity Lutheran Church made 24 scarves to dress the snowmen and drape around trees.
The point is for anyone who needs a scarf for warmth to take one. A sign on the church lawn says: "Sharing the warmth of God's love."
The Mason City Globe Gazette (http://bit.ly/1hOYQTO ) reports the idea came from a church group that knits prayer shawls. They decided to make scarves to use leftover yarn.
A few scarves have already been taken and more are being made to replace them.
The group is talking about expanding the project by making more scarf-wearing snowmen.
