An arctic cold front was tracking through the area Sunday evening, ushering in very cold temperatures and strong winds. Temperatures could be below zero for up to 36 hours in some parts of the CBS4 viewing area.
When you combine the already cold temperatures with blustery winds of 25-35mph, with gusts 40mph or higher, dangerously cold wind chills between -25° and -40° are possible.
"Wind Chill Warning" in effect through Noon Tuesday for Cedar, Clinton, Jackson, Johnson, Muscatine and Scott [IA]; Bureau, Carroll, Henry, Jo Daviess, Knox, Lee, Rock Island, Stark and Whiteside [IL]. A Wind Chill Warning is issued for wind chills of -30° and colder over a significant period of time.
"Wind Chill Advisory" in effect through Noon Tuesday for Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Louisa and Washington [IA]; Henderson, Mercer, Warren [IL]. A Wind Chill Advisory is issued for wind chills between -20° and -29° over a significant period of time.
Frost bite can occur to exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes to a half hour during these types of conditions.
