You could breathe in this poisonous gas by just using your furnace.
Heating contractors said sometimes an old gas furnace can't handle the cold.
It can build up to dangerous levels without you even knowing it.
"You will not smell it. If you see black soot around, that's a big indicator there's a problem," said Joe Hall from Kale Company.
That problem could send you straight to the emergency room.
"We see a lot of carbon monoxide every year, especially in the winter months," said Dr. Dave Dierks who highly recommends people make sure they have proper ventilation in their homes.
Because if you don't... "The carbon monoxide will build up, cause symptoms like a headache, flu like symptoms, chest pain, and in extreme cases a have a coma, and die," Dr. Dierks said.
Contractors like Joe Hall said there's some maintenance you can do on your own, "You got to make sure you have a clean filter, maintain it yearly, a carbon monoxide detector, and check that all registers are open."
A good sign you're in the clear...he said, "Blue flames are a good indicator you've got a good burn. A proper burn lessons the chance for carbon monoxide."
The professionals said if you think there might be carbon monoxide in your home, it's best to give them a call, and not tinker around with the furnace because it could be dangerous.
