METROPOLIS, Ill. (AP) _ An emergency official says the death toll from a string of tornadoes in central and southern Illinois has now reached six. Patti Thompson of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency says the latest death also occurred Sunday in Massac County in far southern Illinois, where she reported two other deaths earlier. She says she does not have any further details. The Emergency Management Agency confirmed earlier that one person died in the central Illinois community of Washington, where a tornado destroyed several blocks of houses. Also, the county coroner in Washington County in southern Illinois said that two people died in the town of New Minden, about 50 miles southeast of St. Louis. The victims were an elderly man and his sister who died when a tornado struck their farm house.

CHICAGO (AP) A resident of the central Illinois community of Washington says a tornado wiped out his house and his entire neighborhood in a matter of seconds.
Michael Perdun tells The Associated Press that when he heard the sound of the tornado bearing down on his neighborhood Sunday morning he only had time to run downstairs, grab his 10-year-old daughter and crouch in the laundry room until the tornado swept through. He says when he walked up the stairs only the wall of his fireplace was standing.
A Washington alderman tells Chicago's WBBM Radio that several people were injured and hundreds of homes were damaged. Tornadoes were reported in several central Illinois communities but it remains unclear the extent of the damage there.

The National Weather Service has confirmed tornadoes have touched down in other central Illinois communities but it's unclear if one tornado touched down several times or there were multiple tornadoes. The weather service says a tornado touched down in Frankfort, about 35 miles southwest of Chicago.

National Weather Service meteorologist Ernie Goetsch says spotters have confirmed that tornadoes have touched down in Washington, Metamora, Morton and near Pekin on Sunday but it is too soon to say whether or not it is the same tornado or multiple tornadoes. He says he has seen photographs that show property damage in Washington.
Earlier in the day, a tornado was reported near East Peoria. In Chicago, high winds and driving rain prompted officials to clear the stands at Soldier Field. Players and coaches were leaving the field shortly after 12:30 p.m.
