Quad Citians came out to say thank you to local service men and women at the Rock Island Arsenal.
They held a Veterans Day ceremony in the rain and snow Tuesday at the Rock Island National Cemetery.
Taps were played and Major General John Wharton talked about the importance of helping vets coming who are home from war become productive members of our society. He said it means a lot to see people thank his comrades for their service.
"When you see a crowd that comes our here on a day like today when it's rainy, snowy mix who are here to honor those veterans, it's just so heartwarming," Maj. Gen. Wharton said. "I still get a little teary eyed when I see that because I know what these kids have been through overseas and in some of the most austere, hardest conditions and as you know many of them don't come back."
Veterans Day was started back in 1919 as Armistice Day to honor those who fought in World War I. It was changed in 1954 to include all veterans.
