Over 520,000 pounds of food was donated during the 2013 Student Hunger Drive and that's about the amount of food that comes in and out of the River Bend Food Bank each month.
"We supply 300 feeding programs with food for their hunger programs." Tom Laughlin is the Executive Director of the River Bend Food Bank, and says he and his workers are always busy distributing the nearly 8 million pounds of food they get each year.
"We have 5 full timers and 11 part timers (working). We're really busy all the time," says Laughlin.
While the River Bend Food Bank distributes to a 22 county area, food from the Hunger Drive stays here in the Quad Cities area. "That food we restrict to just the four counties that the high schools are located in."
But Laughlin says the massive amount of food they get from the high schools will only last them through Christmas, which is why donations to the food bank are always needed.
"We have trucks going out every day...to not only pick up food from food donors but also to take the food out, says Caren Laughlin, Marketing Director at River Bend Food Bank. Caren says there are plenty of programs the food bank offers for those in need.
