A new candy shop opens its doors in LeClaire, Iowa. But there's more to this sweet shop than meets the eye.
At the Shameless Choholic it's every chocolate lovers dream; they've butter creams, truffles, and more. But for co–owner Rebecca Burns making her dream become a reality, wasn't so easy.
"I started at 13 just baking cookies making molded candies that kind of thing, just something I've always loved to do I had a passion for it," said Burns.
But when she started selling candy out of her house in LeClaire in 2001, she never expected what would happen next
"It just exploded, it grew, people wanted more," said Burns.
But right when things seemed to be looking up, everything came crashing down.
"The recession had really taken a huge toll on the business and the construction on the roads in LeClaire also tooka huge toll," said Burns.
After a major flood and a divorce, Rebecca decided to close up shop in 2008.
"There was so much going on in my life I didn't really have too many choices to make. But it was gut wrenching to have to make that decision," said Burns.
So Rebecca turned to Fannie May managing a store for a couple of years, but something was missing.
"Feedback kept coming back when are you opening again, when are you opening again. I had a couple of customers that came through that were very adamant that this is where your heart is; you need to follow your heart you need to do this," said Burns.
That's where Rebecca's friend and business partner Jen Williams comes in.
"We started talking just in general about opening her old shop back up together and how I'd be interested in giving her a hand. And once we started talking about it there was no stopping," said Williams.
The two started working tirelessly to bring the Shameless Chocoholic to life on 2nd and Jones Street.
"We carry a full line of truffles and butter creams, caramels, turtles, um you name it we have it," said Burns.
The shop is now open for business, and Rebecca's dream a reality.
"Wow this is really her dream come true it's so obvious, it's just so amazing to watch," said Williams.
"I feel like I'm home. I feel like it never stopped and I'm in my element here this is where I feel like I belong," said Burns.
So what's next for Rebecca and Jen?
They say they plan to keep expanding flavors and to get the Shameless Chocoholic website up and running soon.
