Some car accidents can be avoided with experience.
But new drivers don't have that experience starting out.
That's why a special program is giving teens a chance to gain some street smarts, in a safe environment.
Tire Rack Street Survival is a national program for young drivers.
And here in the quad cities, 9 teens got to test the limits of their skills Sunday.
"You learn the limits of your car. And how fast you need to go sometimes, and when you need to back off," said 16-year old Haley Meyer.
The day started with a classroom discussion, but teens spent most of the time behind the wheel with an instructor.
The goal of the program is to give teens the skills necessary to avoid accidents, before they happen.
Skills like driving through a wet figure eight course, making high speed turns, and navigating through a maze of cones.
Emergency braking, skid control, and accident avoidance were other elements of the course.
Instructors said the program is the perfect environment for teens to build up the driving skills they need.
"These are the kinds of situations unfortunately that you normally learn through experience and normally that experience is on the road. And sometimes the outcome you want on the road isn't quite the one you're looking for. Here we can control that and give them the feeling of that experience," said instructor Kevin Kraft.
