People of all ages came from all over the Midwest to race at the East Moline BMX track Friday.
Kittie Weston-Knauer is one of the competitors. She's 65. She first tried her luck with BMX a little bit older than most at 40. Her son introduced her to the sport.
"Let me tell you something, easier said than done," Weston-Knauer said. "I have an opportunity to continue to be around young folk and that's what it's all about staying young, and young people really keep me young."
Traveling in her motor home from Des Moines, Kittie says she's glad this years championship is a little bit closer, and so are all the volunteers at East Moline BMX.
"To have the Illinois State Championship in East Moline, this is the first time it's ever been at a different location, so it's really exciting for us," Race Coordinator Paul DePauw said.
For the past 30 years the event has been held in Rockford. After weeks of preparations and excitement, Paul says they're ready to handle the crowds.
"350 riders from all over the place we've been getting calls from all over the place, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa hoping to see some from Nebraska," Depauw said.
Throughout the weekend the races will be split by gender, something Kittie says wasn't an option when she started racing. She says she's been pushing for more female riders for the past 20 years.
The races end Sunday afternoon. It's free for anyone who wants to watch.
