UPDATE: The school board has approved the installation of an ATM Tuesday night at their meeting.
The library, the school lunch room, and an ATM?
A a grown up convenience could soon be installed just outside the classroom for students in Rock Island.
"The request actually came in response to our parents and students asking us to add an ATM machine just for the convenience factor," said Rock Island High School Principal Tim Wernentin.
He said it's been a long time coming.
Other area high schools in places like Bettendorf and Davenport have had ATMs for years.
And students, especially those who are already working, have bank cards to use.
"Of about the 50 students that we visited with I would say about 30 of them had an ATM card of their own," said Principal Wernentin.
Students we spoke with said an ATM is almost a necessity these days.
"Lunch, buying stuff at the bookstore, buying school dance tickets," said Keonna Lampkin, a senior at Rock Island High School.
"Students forgot money for lunch all the time and people are constantly coming into the main office for money and the office can't always make change," said Mackenzie Leatherman, senior at Rock Island High School.
While parents were on both sides of the issue.
"If I can, you know, help her put money in her account, teach her how to track it, and if she needs it here at school then it'll be available to her," said parent Angela Owen.
"Somebody sees somebody taking money out of an ATM. With kids bullying and what–not, they may end up taking the money from them. I'm totally against it so I'm sorry," said parent Jim Rangel.
