Two ceremonies on the Rock Island Arsenal were among the tributes to those lost 12 years ago Wednesday.
The arsenal began remembering the victims of 9/11 bright and early this morning. The Memorial Walk kicked off around sunrise. Participants planted flags, representing each person who died during the September 11th attacks and the War on Terror, near the Twin Towers Memorial.
A dedication and remembrance ceremony was held in the afternoon. The ASC Deputy Commander, Col. Dan Mitchell was in the Pentagon during the attacks.
"About 3 or 4 hours later when I finally got a hold of my wife, she thought that I was dead," Col. Mitchell recalled today. "she was having something like a wake and I was surprised. I'm like, I'm ok."
Mitchell says he didn't know much of what happened in New York City at the World Trade Center, or in Shanksville, PA where Flight 93 was crashed into the ground after passengers re-took the plane.
Mitchell says these events make sure people never forget.
"You remember the sacrifices people have made the last 12 years," Mitchell said. "You remember why you come to work each day."
