It not the biggest museum on the Rock Island Arsenal, but make no mistake, there are plenty of stories inside the marine museum.
"If some of these items could talk, they could really tell you some stories," says Rod Mooney, museum curator.
For years, retired marine Mooney had built a collection of different marine memorabilia.
After more than a decade of stalled museum plans, things started happening in 2007.
"The first sergeant from the building called 'I've got a bunch of stuff, can you come over and help me set up the museum, and I said certainly,'" Mooney explains.
So after more than two thousand hours of work, Mooney has compiled quite the collection.
"This is a badge from the civil war," Mooney shows.
So what's the most interesting artifact?
In Mooney's eyes, it's not an antique weapon, or a commemorative uniform, it's a hand puppet.
"Part of [the puppet's] costume is made from the [Japanese soldier's] baby's clothes, and part from wives clothes. This is really a treasure," explains Mooney.
And it's stories like these that keep Mooney and the museum going.
"This is what this Marine Corps is all about - I've learned a lot doing this. This room is dedicated to marines of yesterday, the marines of today and the marines of tomorrow and it's here to tell a story, the story is the marine corps."
If you'd like to check out the marine museum, you're asked to call the reserve center at 309-782-6044 to schedule an appointment.
