SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ The issue of term limits for state lawmakers is about to be resurrected in connection with the accelerating campaign for governor next year. A political action committee chaired by Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner says it will unveil plans this week to ask voters on the November 2014 ballot to impose term limits.
The idea is popular but always has failed in Illinois.
The biggest obstacle is an Illinois Supreme Court ruling that stopped a 1994 ballot initiative led by Gov. Pat Quinn, who was then state treasurer.
The initiative could serve as an effective strategy for Republicans by rallying voters to the polls. It also could help Rauner by connecting his name to a popular issue and raising more money among his supporters.
