The 124 pound baby was born on August 13 and survived for about three hours before she passed away.
The calf was born to Mimi, an adult giraffe who has given birth to two healthy calves in the past few years. The giraffe showed no outward signs of trouble until about 2 1/2 hours after birth, when she began having trouble breathing.
Studies have shown that half of giraffe calves in the wild do not survive past 6 months of age.
Zookeepers are keeping a close eye on Mimi to make sure she does well.
The calf was sent to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine for a necropsy to determine how she died.
