Back in the Spring, students in the Rock Island/Milan School District were give acuity tests to see what they know. For some kids, summer break can be a mind eraser, coming back to class in the fall forgetting more of what they know. But, a local camp is trying to avoid the old saying, if you don't use it, you lose it.
"They're having fun and learning at the same time," says Katie Colbrese. She's been the summer enrichment program coordinator, and says the past three years have been a success. The idea for the special camp comes from the Child Abuse Council, and every year there's one main goal, "Bridge summer learning loss and give kids the kick start they need in the Fall."
The diverse program focuses a lot on reading and writing. Student December Lewis says, "You write your own scripts, like writing stories and stuff."
The program also helps with subjects kids struggle with, like math. "I used to have trouble with math and learning, but I learned more because it's more fun," says student Amiyah Angel.
But, it's not all work. Kids also had a chance to get outside for fun activities and even went on field trips. "Having that really hands on approach, where the kids are not only reading in a textbook, but they're actually visualizing those experiences as well," says Colbrese.
This Fall, all the students will be given the same acuity test Again. The campers' scores will be compared to other students' scores to see if the summer enrichment program worked.
