In 2012, 21 Illinois children died due to accidental drowning. With temperatures heating up, more kids will be flooding area pools.
There are a few tips you need to know to keep youth child safe this summer.
"Know your limitations, always swim with a buddy, always have adult supervision for children in the pools." That's the advice from Betsy Pratt of the American Red Cross.
In public pools, lifeguards are always on duty. At White Water Junction, at least eleven lifeguards are on duty at all times, according to the Rock Island Aquatic and Fitness director, BJ Ballard. But, she agrees that kids need parental supervision, saying, "Parents definitely need to keep an eye on their kids while they're at public pools, because the guards are here, but they have a lot of people to keep an eye on."
The Red Cross holds training session for the lifeguards, and Ballard makes sure all her staff are up to date with their certifications.
In the end, Pratt has one work of advice: "Just always stay safe around water."
Another way to keep your child safe this summer is to enroll them in swim lessons, which are offered by several pools throughout the area.
