Mike Bruce was dj-ing the anniversary party of Joe Vanhecke and his wife last Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park.
A couple hours in, the party turned from a celebration, into a nightmare.
"Up to that point, it was a beautiful wedding," said Bruce.
According to Bruce, it started when a man wearing a Cubs jersey started squeezing and shaking Vanhecke's 7-year-old son.
"It was pretty violent I mean, not something you'd normally ever see an adult do for a child," said Bruce.
Bruce said Vanhecke went to help his son, who at this point was on the floor.
The other man was still there and a confrontation ensued.
"This gentlemen's walking towards him.. so, As self–defense, Joe comes and two fast like 'get away' shots," said Bruce.
Bruce believes it wasn't the punches that landed the other man in the hospital.
"He was inebriated to the point that he couldn't control himself, he hit his head on the floor," said Bruce.
The man died Friday from his injuries.
Police arrested Vanhecke charging him with disorderly conduct by fighting, the investigation continues and more charges could still come
Yet, Bruce believes Vanhecke did what any parent would.
"100% not his fault. He did what any parent would do, he protected his child," said Bruce.
The deceased man's name is not being released until his family is notified.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
CBS 4 did contact Vanhecke this evening, he declined to comment through the advice of his attorney
