Fire broke out at a popular LeClaire hangout Thursday evening. Crews were able to put down the blaze rather quickly. Around 5:30 crews were called to Sneaky Pete's in LeClaire where a kitchen fire had gotten out of control.
Patrons and employees were evacuated safely as flames shot out the roof.
"We had flames shooting at the ceiling it was pretty bad the place filled up with smoke instantaneously," said cook Rhonda Crawford who did all she could to put the fire out. "Were trying to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher and it was too far gone."
It didn't take long for neighbors to spot the fire. "My 7 year old daughter looked over and noticed flames coming up, my wife just dialed 911 and got out," said Tony Vondracek who lives right next to Sneaky Pete's.
Fire crews were able to douse the flames quickly yet say getting to the fire inside the exhaust fan proved a challenge.
"The problem is Sneaky Pete's is a landmark, it's an old building. It's got a lot of challenges as far as firefighting goes," said LeClaire Fire Chief Mark Slagle.
This is Sneaky Pete's third fire in recent years, all stemming from an exhaust fan over their wood fire grill.
"We cook over wood and on top of the wood we have a fire suppression, some how it got over the fire suppression. We had that problem fixed I don't know what to say," explained restaurant owner Russ Schickling.
And like the last two fires Crawford says Sneaky Pete's will stick around. "It's quite depressing but we will bounce back from it."
Chief Slagle says the damage was contained to the kitchen. The bar and dining room are fine.
