The Moline School District has a big budget problem on its hands and tonight the school board should decide on more cuts.
The Moline School District is facing a $3.8 million deficit next year. Last month administrators laid out 3 budget options to fix the problem, and tonight the board plans to approve of one.
The school district reports that administrators will recommend Option B to the board.
This plan suggests cuts in special education tuition, textbooks and technology. It also includes cutting 24 staff positions, which the board approved at their meeting in March.
The savings would total $2 million for Option B.
The other options are to not make any more reductions besides the staff cuts, or make even more cuts like some extra–curricular activities. The administration does not recommend either of those options.
This decision comes after $9.2 million in reductions the past three years.
The school district reports that a big part of the budget problem is less money from the state and area property taxes.
The board meeting is scheduled to begin shortly after 6:00pm when the Committee of the Whole wraps up at Bicentennial School in Coal Valley.
