Friendly House in Davenport is offering free help in filing your income taxes this year.
And for lots of folks, it's a blessing.
Davenport resident Rita Long has been coming to friendly house for three years now to file her taxes.
If you make under $57 thousand, you can get help filing for free.
"When your only source of income is you yourself, you look at different ways of trying to save that little bit of additional money," said Rita.
The neighborhood center, along with one of their counterpart programs at the Bettendorf Community Center, has already helped around 800 people like Rita file since late January.
The goal for all of them?
Tax refund money.
This year, Rita said she's using hers to pay down debt.
"I'm gonna use this one to probably pay off a credit card," she said.
The coordinator at Friendly House, agrees.
"It does benefit them in that they can reduce their debt and then therefore, have less interest that they're paying throughout the year and the years to come," said program coordinator John Conger.
The Iowa Credit Union League has some other suggestions for what to use your tax refund on.
Starting a rainy day fund for unexpected expenses, investing it long term like for retirement, investing it short term like for a down payment on a big item, and starting a college saving plan are some ideas.
As for Rita, she'll be paying off her credit card, but said she can't resist a well-deserved treat too.
