Davenport West senior Brett Morales has been selected for the US military academy at West Point.
Morales says his goal for four years has been to go to West Point, and he still remembers when he got the call.
"He says well I'd like to announce you've been accepted to West Point, at that moment my heart just stopped. You know I probably screamed a few times, ran around the room, jumped over couches and such. I was just super happy," said Morales.
Brett has a 3.9 GPA, runs cross country and track, is a member of the National Honor Society and a leader in the JROTC program.
Nominated for West Point by both of Iowa's US senators, Brett kept his eye on the prize all through high school.
"It was a lot of sleepless nights. A lot of work all the time. You know doing practice all the time after school so I'm busy all the time," said Morales.
Being chosen for West Point would be a big deal for any high school student, but for Brett, it touches close to the heart.
"Because my father had actually been in the military. And seeing him come home each day in his uniform was really a big inspiration for me," said Morales.
He calls himself an army brat. Following his stepfather's career, Brett's life has meant moving about 10 times, including overseas, before landing in Davenport last year.
Now, finally, Brett is hitting the target he's aimed for his whole life.
"I think if a person has the drive and that personal resolve to want to strive to succeed, they will," said Morales.
Brett says he doesn't know which area of the military he wants to go into just yet, but he's excited to start at West Point on July 1st.
