The Iowa Court of Appeals has denied an appeal by a convicted child molester.
John
Nell Mitchell is serving a seventy-five year sentence for 1999
convictions for three counts of sexual abuse in the second degree involving a
ten year old child. He was also convicted of indecent contact with a different
child in 1999.
Mitchell complained the court should not have let him represent
himself in his post conviction trial. Denying his claim the Court stated "Granted
his wish in the post conviction action, we will not allow Mitchell to complain."
Scott County Attorney Mike Walton said "Having begun this case in 1999, this is one of the most
difficult, long lived cases of my career. It resulted in four separate jury
trials, three involving one child victim, which was extremely difficult for her.
I am glad another chapter has been successfully closed."
