A 36-year-old Colona man is dead after a snowmobiling accident in East Moline.
It happened a little before 2 a.m. on 12th Avenue North near 193rd St.
Deputies say the driver lost control and flipped the machine. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The crash is still under investigation.
It's crashes like this one that remind snowmobilers how quickly fun can turn dangerous. For snowmobilers, this snow is a gift from above, but riders say this kind of thick, slushy, packed snow is the most dangerous.
"Heavy wet snow - it can pack so hard to where it turns into ice," says Joshua Voss, President of Scott County's Sno-Seekers. "This is probably the most difficult, because it takes so much more horsepower to push wet snow than it does with dry snow."
Voss says he's been out on the snow his whole life and has seen almost every accident imaginable. He says it's the smallest things that make the biggest differences.
"You don't land back on your feet," explains Voss. "You land head first it seems like and I probably wouldn't be standing here if it wasn't for a helmet, but it happens."
While many accidents are due to driver error, Voss says you also have to pay close attention to your sled.
"If you have a flat tire on your car, you're not going to drive it down the interstate 65 mph because you know you're going to go into a ditch," he adds. "It's the same thing with a snowmobile; if something is going wrong with your sled, you're not going to keep running it."
Just like a car, Voss says drinking and driving is not only unsafe - it's illegal for snowmobilers. At the end of the day, he says it's always a good idea to just play it smart.
