Iowa American Water has a request for homeowners. If a fire hydrant near your home gets covered by snow, you're asked to clear it off.
Iowa American says if there's a fire, crews will be able to get to the water more quickly. They say just this simple act, can potentially save lives and homes.
"Most people don't think about those hydrants and what they are there for," said Lisa Reisen of Iowa American Water. "In an emergency, it's really important that those fire fighting professionals can find them and hopefully save lives and property as a result."
Iowa American inspects and maintains about 7,500 hydrants in the QCA.
