QCA kids will have a new place to play this weekend.
Two new galleries at the Family Museum in Bettendorf will open on Saturday. The farm and market areas have been completely redone.
Museum staff say this project was a few years in the making, and that it is the second of three phases in a $1.2 million renovation.
Phase I was completed back in October to include a water play table and bridges for kids to climb on.
Now Phase II brings a brand new town area to the museum. The 'Fox Hollow' community includes a fire station, post office, pizza parlor and more.
In this life–like setting kids can put out a building that has a light up fire or put fake pizzas in a pizza oven, although it doesn't actually heat up.
The farm area also has many new interactive features that help kids learn about produce and the farming process. Museum staff say it's a key lesson for kids to learn.
"And it's important for kids to realize that food, you know, doesn't just come from the grocery store, it just doesn't appear. It comes from a farm. There's a farmer who creates that food it goes to a factory, the factory makes the food and they'll send it over to the grocery store," said museum Public Relations Coordinator Elly Gerdts.
says they were worried the construction would stop people from coming.
tells us that luckily the construction hasn't taken away from the museum, but
rather drawn more interest.
sparked a lot of excitement with the community. Kids would stand there and
watch us build Phase II. They love to see the building go up and all the
different props and exciting things that were going in," said Gerdts.
The new galleries open at 9:00AM on Saturday, and if you're looking for something to do the museum will be also be open on President's Day Monday from 9:00am to 8:00pm.
