The first African-American woman to represent Illinois in congress has passed away. Cardiss Collins died Sunday of complications from pneumonia in a Virginia hospital.
She was elected to congress in 1972 to fill the seat left vacant when her husband, Congressman George Collins was killed in a plane crash. Cardiss then went on to serve 22 more years, in which she led efforts to stop credit fraud against women and fought for gender equality in college sports.
Collins was 81 years old.
