A 90 acre stretch near Jumers Casino will soon become a retail destination.

Rock Island City Council Members voted unanimously Monday night to buy the land for one million dollars.

The City Manager has been working on a plan to develop the land at the intersection of I-280 and IL-92, for months.

Monday night's decision paves the way for the city to rezone the area for commercial development

"This is a great opportunity for the city of Rock Island.  It'll give us an opportunity to continue to enhance the services for the citizens by bringing sales tax and property taxes," Thomas Thomas, Rock Island City Manager said.

Council members said they don't know exactly what will go in the newly acquired space, but options include an outlet mall, retail center, sporting goods store, gas station, and restaurants.
