A 90-acre stretch near Jumers Casino is one step closer to
becoming a retail destination.
Rock Island city council members will vote at tonight's
meeting on whether or not to buy the land for one million dollars.
The city manager's been working on a plan to develop the
land at the intersection of I–280 and IL–92, for months.
If tonight's vote passes, it'll pave the way for the city to
rezone the area for commercial development.
"This is a great opportunity for the city of Rock
Island. It'll give us an opportunity to
continue to enhance the services for the citizens by bringing sales tax and
property taxes," said Thomas Thomas, the Rock Island City Manager.
The city council meeting begins at 6:45 tonight.
