It's a no-brainer, bundle up when you go outside.
But turning up the heat on cold days can run up your energy bill fast.
There are ways to keep costs down, and still be comfortable.
"So with seven people in our home, five kids at home, it can be very expensive," said Amanda Hodge of Rock Island.
But David McCammant with MidAmerican Energy said it doesn't have to be, even with a big family.
One good tip?
On sunny days, keep your blinds and drapes open.
"That lets solar heat gain come in from the sun and helps keep the house warmer," said McCammant.
As the sun sets, close them to keep warmth in.
Also, make sure your vents are out in the open and not covered by furniture.
And remember to keep the thermostat set at 68 degrees.
"For every degree above 68 degrees on the thermostat it's going to cost us about four percent more in energy usage," said McCammant.
McCammant said when you're asleep, turn it down even lower.
"You can use an electric blanket, they're very economical to operate, to keep you warm in bed, lots of people have extra blankets," he said.
But don't go too low, or you could risk an even bigger problem, freezing your pipes.
McCammant also said contrary to popular belief, lighting the fireplace isn't going to save you money. So don't use it as a heat source, you're better off with the furnace.
