Change is on the way for Iowa's mental health system.
Iowa's Mental Health and Disability Redesign was passed in May 2012.
However, the transition takes time. Now local communities are ready to make changes, and on Friday QCA residents can learn how it will affect them.
The new structure would offer local health services, a regionally managed system, and enforced statewide standards.
At a public forum on Friday QCA leaders in the mental health field and state representatives will talk about the plan to improve treatment, and hold a Q&A session.
President of the United Way Quad Cities Scott Crane says the QCA already has excellent mental health services, but the issue is the quantity, not the quality.
"There's a waiting list typically. We don't have as many providers as we need to be quite honest. We don't have as many psychiatrists as we need. So while we are fortunate to have a lot of services here, we need more," said Crane.
Crane also says it takes a group effort to get this information out there, and that it can affect a lot of people.
"It's a collaborative effort with us, the hospitals, the health initiative, a number of other providers and it's just, it's an important issue. It might not be in the forefront for everybody but it really is important to a lot of families in our community," said Crane.
The forum will be held at 7:15AM Friday at the Genesis East Campus in Davenport at the Adler Health Education Center.
