If you're heading outside today it's important to bundle up because some arctic air has made its way to the Quad Cities.
Early Tuesday morning temperatures were between 0 and 2 degrees in the QCA, and based on today's forecast it doesn't look like it will get much warmer.
Northeast area schools have 2 hour delays.
No one is used to this weather after such a mild winter last year. Plus, the average high for today in Rock Island is 31 degrees according to the National Weather Service.
"I wish it doesn't get anything below 0 degrees, but I guess I didn't get my wish because I've seen negative 1 already," said Tina Doss of Davenport.
The cold can create several problems. A common issue Quad Citians are dealing with is car trouble.
"Batteries went out, my starter went out in my truck so it's too cold to even work on that. So it's been stuck in the street, but when it gets warm enough I'll fix it," said Steve Curtis of Davenport.
There are several things to keep in mind in order to stay safe and avoid hypothermia.
It's important to dress in layers covering as much exposed skin as possible.
Doctors say eating warm high calorie foods like pasta will help as well as warm sweet drinks. Also, avoid caffeine and alcohol if possible.
If you do suffer a cold injury doctors warn not rub the affected area, that can actually increase the damage.
Also numb skin is easily burned so never use hot water or heating pads. It's best to use warm water or breath instead to slowly bring your temperature back up.
Finally, if your skin is numb hard and looks grayish yellow you may have frost-bite seek medical attention immediately.
