A Rock Island family is homeless Monday Night, after a fire tears through their house.
"On scene our first crews found heavy smoke showing outside the two story residence. When they went inside they, in the basement they found heavy fire on the one wall," said Doug DuBree, Battalion Chief.
The flames broke out just before 7 p.m. at this home in the 4500 Block of 8th Avenue.
Crews had the fire under control in about a half an hour, but the damage was already done.
Starting in the basement, the flames spread to the first and second floor.
Only one person in the family of five, was home at the time.
Jason Harris said he was upstairs sleeping when the smoke detectors started going off, "I went downstairs, smelled smoke, went back upstairs to grab my cell phone. By the time I came back downstairs I couldn't stand it, there was smoke everywhere."
The Red Cross is helping the family.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire.
