Nearly a year after suffering a stroke, Illinois Senator Mark Kirk will make his official return to Washington on Thursday.
Kirk plans to climb the 45 steps to the U.S. Capitol Building, something he says he visualized throughout his months of physical therapy.
The stroke he suffered last January has now forced him to use a four-pronged cane and sometimes a wheelchair.
While he says he plans to scale back on his schedule, he says he has a renewed sense of purpose.
