Experts in Illinois say if leaders in Washington allow the nation to fall off the so called fiscal cliff, the state will suffer.
Experts say Illinois could lose $1 billion in federal grants. That's money that pays for programs for education, housing and defense.
But the recession, which experts say is sure to follow, is an even bigger fear.
Congressional leaders and the president are working to reach a deal on raising revenue and cutting spending to avoid automatic tax increases and massive budget cuts.
