Fire forces a family out of their home Monday night, this time in Rock Island.
It happened just after 6 pm in the 3500 block of 24th Avenue. Firefighters said the fire broke out in a bedroom on the bottom floor. There was no one home at the time. It could have been much worse, but firefighters said neighbors saw what was happening and jumped into action.
"They saw flames inside the structure here behind me, they called 911. There was nobody home at the time. They were knocking on the door, the neighbors warned us that there were some pets inside," said Battalion Chief Doug DuPree, Rock Island Fire Department.
Firefighters didn't get to the parakeet in time, but they did manage to save two dogs and a guinea pig. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
