Iowa law enforcement is on a mission to show the importance of wearing a seatbelt. The state patrol kicked off Buckle Up America on Monday.

Trooper Dan Loussaert says the best way to protect yourself from other people on the roads this holiday season is to buckle up.

He says most crashes are survivable if you're buckled up, and thinking you don't need to because you're a good driver is a big mistake.

"You're sharing the roadway with other people that aren't careful drivers and maybe they're not making the best choices and during the holidays we're driving on highways that we're not as familiar on and there are usually more people in the car which can be a distraction."

When there are other people in your car wearing your seatbelt isn't enough. Your passengers need to buckle up too.  During a crash, unbuckled passengers can actually injure others.

For those of you who still aren't convinced, Trooper Dan says spotting drivers breaking the law is pretty easy.

"Unfortunately a lot of people that are more aggressive drivers, speeding making unsafe passes are usually the ones that are not as concerned with that seatbelt either."

Iowa State Troopers will be working the Buckle Up America project through next Sunday
