A gas leak forced several Rock Island buildings to evacuate this morning.
Crews were digging in the area of 3rd Avenue and 15th Street when a gas line was struck. City Hall and the police department were among several buildings forced to evacuate.
Among the buildings evacuated was the YWCA. 75 kids ranging from 7-weeks to 5-years-old were taken to the nearby Holiday Inn. The YWCA says they've prepared for situations just like this.
"Luckily, we do monthly fire and evacuation drills at the Y," said Julie Larson, CEO of the YWCA. "So the staff and the children were very use to getting out of the building quickly, and getting to a safe place."
The leak was repaired quickly and people returned to their buildings after about an hour.
