A power outage at the Burlington wastewater treatment plant Tuesday morning
caused equipment to shut down.
All processing
equipment in the headworks building failed during the outage at 9:32 a.m. An
estimated 105,000 gallons of untreated wastewater flooded the building and then
discharged to the Mississippi River during the 15 minutes before staff could
restart the equipment.
Plant workers
are cleaning the building, hosing the pavement and area where the effluent
flowed into the river.
The DNR will
monitor the cleanup.
