Former student sentenced for attacking officer

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) _ A former University of Iowa student who attacked an Iowa City police officer has been given 30 days in jail and a suspended prison sentence of five years. 

Branden Plummer apologized to Iowa City police Sgt. Brian Krei at Plummer's sentencing on Friday. 

Plummer had pleaded guilty after making a deal for lesser charges.

He had been charged with attempted murder and willful injury in the attack Nov. 18 attack on Krei.       

Witnesses say Plummer choked Krei and slammed his head into a sidewalk.
