(AP)  An Iowa police chief shot twice during a high-speed chase with bank robbery suspects is in critical but stable condition.

A spokesman for Allen Hospital in Waterloo says Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain was in surgery for hours Tuesday for injuries to his neck, shoulder and thumb.  Cain was shot through the neck with one bullet while a second went through his thumb and then through his shoulder.

Cain will be transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics later Wednesday for hand surgery.

An Iowa State Patrol spokesman says trooper Mark Domino is recovering after being shot in the bicep.

24-year-old Jeremiah Mumford of New Hampton is charged with six counts of attempted murder and five counts of terrorism.  His alleged accomplice, 19-year-old William Clayton of Osage, is charged with aiding and abetting and five counts of terrorism.

Both men made initial court appearances and are being held in the Bremer County Jail.

Special Agent Larry Hedlund of the Division of Criminal Investigation says the suspects used multiple rifles and handguns to shoot at police who were pursuing them after Tuesday's bank robbery in Maynard.  He called it a "running gun battle.''
