A storm that is projected to hit the Atlantic coast of the United States early Tuesday is continuing to cause damage and deaths in the Caribbean.

The number of dead in Haiti from Hurricane Sandy has reached 26, with 14 others dead elsewhere in the region.

Officials at a morgue in western Haiti say if the rain from the storm continues, they will expect to see more deaths.

Officials say some died while trying to cross rivers that were swollen by the rain. Others were killed in mudslides.

As Sandy continues on a course toward the United States, forecasters are warning that it could merge with two other systems to become a monster, hybrid storm.

They say there will be hundreds of miles of steady, strong and damaging wind and rain for the entire Eastern region for several days.

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) _ Power is out in parts of the Bahamas after a blow from Hurricane Sandy.        It weakened to a Category 1 storm overnight, with top winds of 80 miles an hour, but not before flooding roads and cutting off islands in the Bahamas. One man died in a fall from his roof while trying to repair a window shutter.       Officials in the Bahamas say the storm seems to have inflicted the greatest damage on the island of Exuma, where there are reports of downed trees, power lines and damage to homes.      In all, the storm is linked to 29 deaths across the Caribbean.  It's now on a path that could see it blend with a winter storm as it hits the U.S. East Coast early next week.    The hurricane left 11 people dead in Cuba as its winds and rain toppled houses and ripped off roofs. It was Cuba's deadliest storm in more than seven years. Sixteen people died in Haiti, and one in Jamaica.
