Police in Morrison, IL are warning residents of a Prize Claim scam.
Officers say some residents are getting a Prize Claim/Final Notification from Mellon Securities Group Inc., with a UK return address. Enclosed is a check from UPM Pharmaceuticals.
The instructions say to cash the check, and submit a portion of the money to a specific individual for "applicable Government taxes".
Officers say the check appears to be legit, but the warn that you should not cash it under any circumstances.
Police say anytime you receive an unexpected check and
are then asked to forward a portion of such funds to another person or address,
it is fraudulent.
They say similar scams are being attempted by telephone and email as well.
