Several pets died from the fire at a Moline apartment building yesterday morning.
The fire broke out just before eleven Thursday at the building on 26th Avenue.
No residents were hurt but firefighters said many animals weren't able to make it out in time.
Rescue crews said in any emergency situation, your own life is the first priority but there are some preventative measures you can take to keep your pets safe.
"I would encourage pet owners to adopt or practice an exit drill in the home, not only of their family members, but incorporate their pets too," said Neil Gainey, district chief of the Davenport Fire Department.
Firefighters also said local pet stores sell decals that you can put in the windows of your home, letting them know you have pets.
