(ap) _ Northern Illinois University President John Peters says he'll step down at the end of the school year after 13 years as head of the DeKalb campus. Peters was president of NIU in 2008 when a gunman opened fire in a lecture hall, killing five students and injuring many others. He announced his departure Thursday during his yearly state of the university address. University officials said Peters' future plans are yet to be determined but he will be involved at NIU. Peters' last day will be June 30. He has held the post since June 2000. Peters says he plans to "provide advice and counsel'' to NIU's next president and says he will assist the NIU foundation. School officials say trustees will start a national search for Peters' replacement this fall.
