Mountain lion killed in Des Moines

(AP) A mountain lion has been shot and killed near two schools in Des Moines.

Police were called to the Highland Park neighborhood on the city's north side Thursday morning. An officer shot and killed the big cat near a greenhouse in the backyard of a home.

The area is close to Harding Middle School and Madison Elementary School.

A mountain lion was spotted just west of the area on July 12. Police checked the neighborhood, but didn't spot the animal.
