River Bend Food Bank doles out the canned goods for more than 300 shelters, but with empty shelves they're struggling to fill empty stomachs.
Donations are low across the board. Many organizations don't have enough supply for the high demand. River Bend usually hands out 600,000 pounds of food per month stretching over 22 counties throughout Iowa and Illinois.
There are a few programs that are specifically for children, whose growing bodies need food the most. And who better to help kids than kids? The Student Hunger Drive is officially under way. The shelter has high hopes that a bit of healthy competition between high schools will result in shelves of canned goods for River Bend.
The 6 week drive ends in early November, just in time for Thanksgiving Dinner. If you do have any extra food you'd like to donate you can bring it to river bend directly on 12th street in Moline. They do ask that everything is in its original packaging.
