(AP) A former University of Iowa student who attacked an Iowa City police officer has pleaded guilty after making a deal for a lesser charge.
Branden Plummer, 21, pleaded guilty on Friday morning to willful injury and interference with official acts. He had been charged with attempted murder and willful injury in the attack on Sgt. Brian Krei on Nov. 18th.
The two felonies carry a maximum total of seven years in prison. Prosecutor Anne Lahey says the state agreed to a suspension of the five-year sentence for willful injury and will seek 60 days in jail for the interference charge.
Witnesses say Plummer choked Krei and slammed his head into a sidewalk.
