(AP) _ Prosecutors say more than 400 horses that belong to a former city comptroller in Northern Illinois accused of stealing millions in public money will be sold by September 30th.
U.S. attorneys announced the timeline during a status hearing Monday on Rita Crundwell's case. The 59-year-old Dixon resident is accused of misappropriating more than $53 million since 1990 to help support a lavish lifestyle and her nationally renowned horse breeding operation.
She has pleaded not guilty to wire fraud. Crundwell's defense attorneys also requested more time to review about 18,000 pages of evidence. The judge granted their request.
If Crundwell is found guilty, net proceeds from the sales will go toward restitution for the City of Dixon.
