The Iowa City landfill is open again to the public even though the fire continues to burn. On Sunday contractors completed the "Stir, Burn, and Cover" efforts to contain the fire. Workers stirred the layer of burning tires to make them burn faster, then covered them with a layer of clay.
The city is now working to keep nearby areas of the landfill from catching on fire. They believe that some smoke will still seep out of the covered areas, but large plumes are not expected.
All Landfill services are currently available during
regular business hours, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Questions regarding Landfill services can be directed to the onsite
administrative offices at (319) 356-5185.
