Dr. Oz's Transformation Nation: Million Dollar You

The Dr. Oz Show launched its biggest call to action yet. And the Dr. Oz Show's Transformation Nation, Million Dollar You contest is drawing to a close.  Throughout the season, Dr. Oz encouraged viewers to register and have their official Transformation Nation weigh-in at a Weight Watchers location. The weigh-in must be performed by February 26th.  Over one million registrants have already joined the challenge to tackle the seven key steps to weight loss and healthy living!

This is the year Dr. Oz wants our viewers to put themselves first and take control of their weight and their health once and for all.

On September 26, the show launched "Dr. Oz's Transformation Nation: Million Dollar You." Over the course of the season, this program took viewers through seven key steps this year to transform their health. Steps include learning your BMI, finding out your family's health history, getting more sleep, accessing your stress, adding fitness to your life, connecting with your doctor and learning how support from friends is the key to success. And one lucky person who completes all seven steps will walk away with one million dollars!

The Dr. Oz Show has partnered with Weight Watchers, who share the show's values on the importance of healthy nutrition, exercise and support. Over the past few decades, morbidity levels have increased sharply due to the rising rates of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and more, but if every adult just lost 10% of their body weight or approximately 20 pounds, these rates could be drastically reduced. Together with Weight Watchers, the show hopes to help registrants lose weight.

HOW DOES THE CONTEST WORKS ON THE DR. OZ SHOW?
Viewers enter the contest on-line through
www.doctoroz.com. Viewers need to follow the seven-step program, with each step having its own completion criteria. Each step will be revealed every few months throughout the year.

A random lottery process will select 200 winners that have completed all the steps and questionnaires. Judges will then select contestants with the most outstanding performance in each step, combined with their personal motivation essays, to narrow down the pool further to 10. These finalists will be introduced on the show and on the website, and the public will then be given the opportunity to vote and select a winner.

WHAT ARE THE FIRST 2 STEPS OF THE CONTEST?
The first step is "Tell a Friend." It is a viral call to action and we want participants to share it with everyone they care about. This is the year viewers are going to change their lives but they can't go it alone.
The second step is for viewers to enter the contest online at
www.doctoroz.com. Web participants will then find a Weight Watchers location near them. Between September 26 and October 3rd, Weight Watchers is offering everyone a complimentary weigh-in. Once they have their initial weigh-in, they visit www.doctoroz.com to calculate their BMI (body mass index). If their BMI is not healthy, they can make losing 10% of their body weight your goal and become eligible to participate in the Transformation Nation: Million Dollar You contest.

WHAT ARE ALL SEVEN STEPS OF THE ENTIRE PROGRAM?

  • TELL A FRIEND: The show is asking all Americans to enlist their friends because we know you cannot go it alone. Studies show folks who lose weight in groups keep their weight off and are more successful in the long term.
  • CALCULATE YOUR BMI WITH WEIGHT WATCHERS: Learn the importance of your Body Mass Index. If you don't have a healthy BMI, we are asking you to lose 10% of your body weight or reach a healthy BMI, which correlates to a drop in risk to the things we fear most: cancer, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. The first step in calculating your BMI is to go to a local Weight Watchers Center. There, you'll find out your starting weight. A leader will give you a complimentary weigh-in, and, you can stay for a meeting where you'll learn what getting started on (and sticking to) Weight Watchers is all about.
  • CONNECT WITH YOUR DOCTOR: Nearly 1/3 of all Americans don't see a doctor every year. We want you to start a relationship with your doctor so you can have an honest conversation with your weight before it's a bigger problem. Know the questions to ask your doctor and find out the right numbers to talk with them about, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose. Having a relationship will help you prevent future illness. If you don't have a doctor we want you to seek out your pharmacist who can help get the conversation going.
  • LEARN YOUR FAMILY'S HEALTH HISTORY: One of the critical tools a doctor uses to diagnose illness and recommend preventative care is your family history. Knowing your family's health history enables you to can get life saving screenings before it's too late. The Dr. Oz Show web site will be offering unique web tools powered by Sharecare to help you fill out your family history and compile all critical information.
  • GET MORE SLEEP: This step will teach Americans to get at least 30 more minutes of sleep a night and go to bed ½ hour earlier. We know that lack of sleep is a hidden factor of weight gain.
ASSESS YOUR STRESS: Everyone must understand how stress is a key factor in weight gain, and learn new and practical ways to manage their stress better. Stress can affect the neuroendocrine system, resulting in abdominal fat, for example: indirectly stress is linked to the consumption of too many fatty or sugary foods and inactivity.
  • START NEW FITNESS HABITS: Something as simple as a brisk walking for 30-60 minutes, five times a week can lower your risk of heart disease by about 40%. The web site will provide contestants with various fitness resources, and a national fitness event will be helped in the spring.
